When I was looking for a dog ramp I did a fair bit of research and some of the ones I found are reviewed on this page.  To buy a dog ramp have a look at the Agility Bits selection or see if you can find a bargain on ebay

Solvit Aluminium telescopic
These are expensive but absolutely brilliant. The best type is made from aluminium as this means it's light to handle but still very strong.  Storing it might be difficult if you have passengers on the back seat and a large dog in the rear space although you could always stand it up on one end.  We found this ramp useful for getting Jamie in and out of a caravan as well as getting in and out of the car.  You can extend it as little or as much as you like.  The ramp weighs just under 6kg and carries 180kg. (Jamie weighs around 27kg). You can also get an xl version which is longer and slightly wider.

Wooden telescopic
It is possible to buy a cheaper wooden telescopic dog ramp but they are heavier to handle.  The Pisces ramp on the left weighs around 10kg and carries a 70kg dog.

Pet Gear bi fold
This one weighs only 6.5kg and carries approx 113.5kg.  The ramp is compact and lightweight and is a popular choice for smaller dogs.  Most people find it easy to use but if you have a larger dog you may find the Pet Gear tri fold more  suitable.

Pet Gear Tri-Fold Dog Ramp

Pet Gear Tri fold
This is a good sturdy ramp with a good surface.  It will carry a dog weighing up to 90kg.  It folds into three so that it can be stored more easily in the car if you are carrying a passenger in the back seat and a dog in the rear space.  The only down side is the weight of the ramp which is 11.5kg.  I found this one too heavy to handle so I sold it to a man who had no trouble opening and folding it and who used it for his rottweiler.

Saunders dog ramp
This one is made from plywood with a steel frame. I haven't been able to find any reviews of this product but the weight is only 7kg and it has a non slip surface.  It is expensive compared to some of the other ramps and you would expect a ramp in this price region to be top quality.

Other Ramps

A lot of other ramps are available and some are much cheaper than others.  Wooden ramps tend to be heavier than the aluminium type.  You may find that some are slatted to reduce weight.  if you're thinking of buying a ramp do ask the seller some questions if the information isn't given on the website. The important things to ask are:
What are the dimensions of the ramp both folded and unfolded?
What is the width of the tread that the dog actually walks on?
What is the maximum load on the ramp?
Does the ramp have rubber feet to stop it slipping on a hard surface?
Does the ramp have a good non slip surface for the dog to walk on?

You must use your own judgement to decide whether your dog will be able to walk up a steep ramp like the German shepherd in the picture above.   Jamie couldn't manage this but if the ramp was placed against something lower he'd be fine.
Amazon has some reviews of dog ramps and so does Petplanet.  It's worth reading what other people say about them before you make your choice.
